Get Started with Wayne-Dalton Car2u System
By David Powell
Coming home to a dark house can be pretty daunting sometimes. With the Wayne-Dalton Car2u to Z-Wave Gateway you'll never have to enter a dark home again. The Car2u Gateway allows you to use your existing Car2u compatible key chain remote, wireless keypad, or factory integrated car controller to activate Z-Wave lighting scenes.
This How-To will introduce you to some of the Wayne-Dalton products so that you can better understand the roles they play in a Car2u system. I will also walk you through setting up a Wayne-Dalton Car2u three-button key chain remote that will allow you to control your Z-Wave lighting devices. So the next time you go to pull into your garage, you can be sure you're stepping out of your car and into a well lit pathway.
Installation Preparation
The Wayne-Dalton Car2u Gateway is designed to act as a secondary or primary Z-Wave controller. We will be using it as a secondary controller with the Hawking HomeRemote being our primary controller (see How-To: Get Started with Hawking HomeRemote). We start by adding Z-Wave devices into our primary controller. I have added two GE Jasco plug-in lighting modules to the HomeRemote controller as well as a Wayne-Dalton Thermostat.

Copying Controller Information
You can only have one primary controller in your Z-Wave network. The primary controller is used to add and remove devices from the network. However, Z-Wave allows us to create secondary controllers by copying the information stored in your primary to another controller. Once your secondary controller is created, you can then control devices and create scenes.
A scene can be thought of as a predefined setting for your lights. Pressing one button on a controller will activate the scene that tells the lights to adjust to the level you have previously defined.
Step 1: Place your primary controller in transfer mode. For the HomeRemote this is located in the modules section under Advanced Options.

Step 2: On the Car2u Gateway Press and hold the Scene 1 and Copy buttons simultaneously until all three scene lights start flashing. This will start the transfer process. Note: the Car2u gateway module must be operating on battery power. Do not plug it into the wall power when performing configuration procedures.
Adding Device to Scenes
Step 1: On the Gateway press and hold the scene (1, 2, or 3) you want to add a device to. It will flash on then off then back on again. Don't let go of the scene button.
Step 2: While still holding the scene button press the program button on the device you want to add.
Step 3: The LED on the wireless gateway will flash three times to indicate the devices were successfully added. Do not release the Scene button until after you have seen the three flashes.
Step 4: Press and hold the Scene button again. Then set the level of the device by pressing its operation button.
Step 5: Release the scene button on the wireless gateway.
Step 6: Repeat steps 1 through 5 for all devices.
Mapping Key Chain to Scene
Step 1: Press and hold the scene button you want to program. When the LED turns off, immediately release the button.
Step 2: Press and hold the key chain button you want to map to the scene.
Step 3: The LED on the wireless gateway will flash three times quickly. This indicates a successful mapping. Release the key chain button after the three flashes.

Description |

Wireless Gateway |
This device is integrated into your Z-Wave network as a secondary controller. It allows you to use any Car2u compatible universal controller to activate its three scenes. Each button on the Car2u controller is mapped to either a garage door or gateway operation or to a single Z-Wave scene. |

3-Button Key Chain Remote |
This is a universal Car2u Key Chain remote, not to be confused with a Key Chain remote. You can map each of these buttons to a task of your choosing. Perhaps the large buttons is for opening the garage door and the smaller buttons are for controlling your outdoor and indoor lighting scenes. You pick! |
Wireless Keypad Remote |
The wireless Car2u keypad is another Car2u remote that allows you to operate garage doors and gateways as well as Z-Wave scenes. The unique feature about this remote is that you are not limited to only three actions. This remote allows you to program different PIN codes for each action. Typing in one PIN could open the garage while typing in another PIN could turn on your sprinkler system. It ideal to have outside by the patio or by the garage door. |
Factory Integrated Car Remote |
These Car2u remotes come integrated in many modern cars. A list of cars which are shipping with these remotes can be found on www.learcar2u.com. Like the other remotes you get to decide what each button does. |

Garage Door Opener Conversion Module |
This device connects to your existing garage door opener to allow you to control that garage door opener using a universal Car2u remote control. |
